Hungarian conductor György Vashegyi (b. 1970) is a striking figure on the international classical music scene for a number of reasons.
First and foremost, because he is both a specialist in Early music and a fully trained professional conductor, a rather rare combination. Furthermore, his versatility could be described as unrivalled. Maestro Vashegyi's repertoire encompasses well-known and lesser-known masterpieces spanning five centuries, from the seventeenth century to the present day. Moreover, he is equally at home with symphonic works as he is with the operatic repertoire.
The number of works (operas, oratorios, masses, symphonies, concertos) that he premiered or rediscovered for our time runs into the many dozens, as is also evident from his internationally acclaimed discography.
Maestro Vashegyi's extensive experience in opera is reflected, among other things, in the way he accompanies his vocal soloist(s) and/or instrumental soloist(s), who are invited to phrase their parts freely and expressively, whilst the orchestra 'breathes' with them and follows their lead. A thorough study of the musical sources always forms the basis of his interpretations.
As well as Hungarian, Maestro Vashegyi speaks English, German, French and Italian, and in his interpretations of vocal music he is constantly seeking to strike the most meaningful balance between the music and the sung text.
Maestro Vashegyi is also a very curious and investigating conductor, who is always open for interesting program suggestions and for studying unknown or new high quality scores.
